ADL Administration Section

Administrative Office:
As the arena in which clients and visitors are received, the administrative office area is the initial contact between the community and the Animal Diagnostic Laboratory. It is here that a submitter may give a case history to a diagnostician, have an inquiry responded to or referred, leave a sample for testing or meet with a laboratory employee. Interaction with clients and other laboratories can be in person or by telephone; test results are available, information distributed and accounts processed. Reports are printed and faxed or mailed.

A major function of the administrative section of the laboratory is to provide friendly and effective interoffice support. The resident director is routinely available for input and decisions relating to human resources and laboratory protocol as well as to diagnostic procedures. Staff support positions provide clerical, procurement and informational backup for lab personnel and clients.

Personnel:
John I Enck Jr. ,
Director of the Animal Diagnostic Laboratory, provides liaison with the PADLS tripartite system of the Animal Health and Diagnostic Commission and the Department of Veterinary Science at Penn State University, oversees all laboratory activities, interacts with clients using the laboratory’s resources and serves as a liaison with producer and  veterinary organizations.

Sandra Maitland : Client Services Representative and Receptionist, greets and provides a wide variety of information and help to a diverse population of clients and visitors, directs telephone calls, generates reports and communicates test results to clients.

Receiving personnel verify the appropriateness of tests requested by the client, perform initial data entry, deliver samples to various areas of the laboratory  for testing and prepares  hazardous as well as non-hazardous samples according to IATA specifications for shipment.

Personnel
Annette Martin: Senior Receiving Technician, accessions samples submitted, completes corresponding computer data entry, resolves discrepancies or insufficient information, delivers samples throughout the lab and prepares paperwork and samples being referred to other labs.

Computer Support Office:
Expert computer network systems maintenance and user training, encompassing hardware, software and troubleshooting, is continually available through the ADL’s computer support office.

The PADLS system is networked by a LIMS system to enhance the flow of information across laboratories. A new generation LIMS system is under construction to include  features which will facilitate the use of laboratory services, such as client access through the internet.

Personnel:
Derek Shaffer: Systems coordinator, computer programmer and analyst, provides systems support for ADL, helps laboratory  personnel with computer-related issues, maintains databases and troubleshoots.
