ADL  MISSION STATEMENT
The Animal Diagnostic Laboratory within the Department of Veterinary Science at Penn State University is a nationally recognized veterinary diagnostic laboratory committed to the health of animals. With a staff of veterinarians and veterinary specialists, many of which are board certified in such specialties as preventative medicine, microbiology, pathology, avian medicine and virology, the laboratory serves as a central reference facility for the approximately 1,200 veterinarians and animal owners that currently use the service.  



ADL Diagnostic Functions:

Provide diagnostic and analytical testing services that detect infectious and non-infectious causes of disease in animals.

  • Bacterial isolation, identification and  susceptibility testing
  • Biopsy service to identify cancer and other diseases in animals
  • Virus isolation and identification
  • Serology to monitor health and detect disease in animals
  • Anatomic pathology
  • Identification of parasites
  • Fungal disease identification
  • Bacterial serotyping, toxin testing and other virulence testing on disease producing enteric bacteria

Provide recommendations to referring veterinarians and animal owners regarding treatment and prevention of disease in animals.

  • Vaccination programs
  • Medical treatments (antibiotics, antifungals, nutritional)
  • Provide continuing education to practicing veterinarians

Perform surveillance testing procedures to safeguard the health of animals.

  • Examination of blood and other samples
  • Various infectious diseases monitored

Develop new and improved testing procedures for animal diseases.

  • ELISA Tests for Salmonella enteritidis
  • Molecular-based tests 
  • PCR
  • Ribotyping

Provide hands-on training programs for pre-veterinary medical students.

  • Independent study programs
  • Undergraduate research programs
  • Honors programs

Provide advanced training in diagnostic medicine for veterinary medical students.
